Keith Blackledge
Our Story
The first steering committee to determine the viability of an affiliate in our community, under the leadership of then North Platte Telegraph newspaper editor, Keith Blackledge, was held on March 3, 1997. After many meetings and gathering much required data it was reported that the name of North Platte Area Habitat for Humanity (NPAHFH) had been approved for the group on April 8, 1997.
Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws were approved and the Affiliate status was granted in January 1998. The lot for the first house was purchased in March of 1998, family selected in April 1998, ground breaking in May 1998, and the house was completed and dedicated on September 20, 1998.
NPAHFH functions primarily as a volunteer organization with the exception of an Executive Director, Office Manager, Community Outreach Coordinator and Construction Coordinator.
NPAHFH has an active Board of Directors as well as many Operating Committees: Construction, Family Selection, Family Support, Fund Raising, Safety and Site Selection Committee.
NPAHFH is working hard to make safe, decent, affordable homes available to low-income families. Through the support from the community we can provide a hand up, rather than a hand out to those seeking a decent home of their own. Homes are built with volunteer labor and sold to qualified families at no profit, with no interest loans.
NPAHFH has great community support through many banks, corporations, businesses, churches, schools, organizations, clubs and individuals who offer their time, materials, food, money and prayers to get these homes started. NPAHFH continues to fund the building through gifts in kind and financial support. The Carpenter Club, in which community members pledge to contribute to each house built, has also been a much appreciated source of revenue.
As of 2024, our affiliate has completed and dedicated 66 homes!
